Female elements (2010)

The series of 32 watercolors is based on the archival photographs of four women, who had been accused of taking part in the crimes committed by the Red Army in Southern Ukraine during the Russian Civil War. The name of only one of the alleged executioners was documented; all four women had been executed by the White army. The title for the project comes from the writings of Alexandra Kollontai, a Russian revolutionary and one of the few female politiciansin the USSR; she is best known for her social theories advocating the liberation of women from their traditionally subservient roles in Russian society.
